Excerpt from a novella, where a man gets caught up in a world of demons and angels, and helps them on a quest to find a special dagger.
The cities on the island prove fruitless in helping their investigation. As they searched between towns, Flare grew more frustrated and Luna more silent. He’d never seen the two of them fight, but from the way Luna looked after each argument, Jason guessed it wasn’t exactly common territory for her either. Flare spent all hours of the day searching, and when she wasn’t, she usually stormed out of their hotel in an uproar, leaving Luna and Jason to spend more time together.
“I feel like this is all my fault,” Jason said with a heavy sigh as the door to their room slammed shut.
“You shouldn’t,” Luna answered with a sigh of her own, “Even if you hadn’t found that lead, she’d be just as angry in Athens as she is here.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t mean to drag you into it. You look more miserable every day.”
“I am used to her passion, but normally it’s directed toward me, not against me,” Luna said, “Right now though, it seems all she can think about is getting ahold of the blade.”
“And you don’t have any interest in it? I mean, I haven’t met Suna, but if she’s anything like Elena that’s terrifying.”
Luna cracked a smile, “I suppose. They are similar in their urge to purify the world, but I don’t worry about her the way Flare worries about Elena.”
“But wouldn’t you want to be rid of her, if you could be?”
“I don’t know,” Luna answered, “I guess it would be nice, to just be myself, but I already feel like that most of the time. The two of us create one whole, to be separate, it seems odd to me.”
“Huh, I guess that makes sense…” Jason trailed off.
“Think of it this way. It’d be like separating your happiness from your sadness, so you could only ever feel happy.”
“What’s so bad about that?” Jason asked, “Sounds like a good life.”
“Perhaps to some, but to most, how would you know you were happy if you didn’t know what sadness was,” Luna pointed out. Then, she suddenly brightened up, “But let’s not dwell on that. None of it will matter unless we find the blade. Where are we looking tomorrow?”
“Well,” Jason said, grabbing an open map from the desk, “We’re supposed to go hiking through this park to see if there’s anything left behind there.”
“Better pack some water and snacks, I’ve got a feeling we’ll be out there all day if Flare has her way.”
“Does Flare ever not have her way?” Jason asked with a grin.
Luna smiled back, “You make a good point.”
