A short film about a young man’s struggle to introduce his family to his partner.

INT. APARTMENT KITCHEN – MORNING

LIAM, a slender and lanky 24 year-old man, and JAI, an athletic 26 year-old man, sit at a table and eat breakfast. Liam checks his watch and stuffs food into his mouth while Jai reclines in his chair and takes slow bites.

LIAM
I’m gonna be home late tonight.

JAI
You’re kidding. Is work keeping
you again?

LIAM
No, it’s not work. I’m just gonna
stop by the hospital and see how
my grandma’s doing.

Jai nods. He shoves his plate away and lets out a sigh.

JAI
So, have you told them yet?

LIAM
Jai, do we really have to-

Jai holds his hands up in a mock gesture of innocence.

JAI
I’m just asking, that’s all.

LIAM
No, I haven’t. I have to tell
my grandmother first, then I’ll tell
them.

JAI
Why do you have to tell her first?

LIAM
I just do, alright.

JAI
Alright. You can do it however
you want to…but if you’re gonna see
her today.

LIAM
I don’t know-

JAI
I’m just saying, give it a try.

Liam picks up his plate and goes to the counter. He drops his plate into the sink and it clatters against the metal. He waits for the echoing to stop. Jai watches him.

LIAM
Okay, I’ll try.

Liam looks at his watch and grabs his bag from the counter.

LIAM
I’ve got to get to work, you mind
cleaning up?

JAI
Nah, I got it.

Liam quickly kisses Jai then leaves the room in a whirl.

LIAM
(Calling)
I’ll see you tonight. Love you.

JAI
Love you too.

A short film about a young woman’s struggle to do her job when it comes at the price of another.

INT. MCDONALD’S – Day

AVA, a 20 year-old McDonald’s employee, stands behind the counter and chews bubble gum. Her boss, CLARICE, approaches and shoves her shoulder. She stumbles into the counter.

CLARICE
Don’t you have work to be doing?

AVA
I thought I was working.

CLARICE
I don’t pay you to stand there
doing nothing. Go wipe off the
tables or something.

Ava takes a rag from her apron pocket. Clarice blocks her.

CLARICE
And while you’re at it, throw out
that hobo. This isn’t a charity.

Clarice moves out of the way, and Ava steps out from behind the counter. She sees JARED, a middle-aged man in layers of old, dirty clothing. He slumps in the corner of a booth.

Ava begins wiping down a table across the restaurant from Jared. She looks back at the counter and sees Clarice jerk her head in Jared’s direction. Ava quits cleaning the booth and walks up to Jared. She twists her rag in her hands.

AVA
Sir, are you planning on buying
something today?

Jared quickly wipes a pile of coins, a few pennies and a dime, off the table and puts them away in his coat pocket.

JARED
I’m just trying to get out of the
cold. It’s freezing out there.

AVA
I’m sorry, but if you aren’t going
to buy anything I’m afraid I have
to ask you to leave. That’s
company policy.

JARED
Maybe you could spare some change
then? I’m just a little short.

AVA
I’m sorry, but-

JARED
You guys get free meals, right?

AVA
Yes, but- Look, we aren’t allowed
to- we can’t give them away. Not
to people like you, anyways.

​INT. APARTMENT LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

A young woman, CLARA, stands in a low lit room. A vase of flowers on the table. A young man, DAVON, stands across.

CLARA
So you’re saying I’m not worth the
money to come down here?

DAVON
No, that’s not it-

CLARA
So what is it then? You don’t want
to come and visit me?

DAVON
I just can’t afford it right now.

CLARA
But you can afford to go on
business trips across the country,
all the way to L.A., but coming up
the coast is too expensive.

DAVON
Clara, you’re being ridiculous.

CLARA
Oh, now I’m ridiculous?

DAVON
Yes. Ridiculous and stubborn and
a pain in my ass.

CLARA
You know what, just, just get out.

DAVON
You can’t kick me out, my train
doesn’t leave until tomorrow. I
don’t have anywhere to go.

CLARA
How about a hotel, where you can
go and spend your precious money.

DAVON
What about my stuff?

CLARA
Good thing you’re already packed.

Clara leaves the room and returns with a suitcase and a bag. She shoves them at Davon. He jerks the handle up on the suitcase. Clara walks him to the door. He leaves.

Clara slams the door. She returns to the living room, grabs the flowers, and throws them in the trash. She storms to her bedroom. A cell phone sits on a chair, unnoticed.
