“Embracing Henry” was the culmination of half-semester long group project as part of the English seminar, “Picturing Texts, Making Media.” My group decided to focus on the connection between virtual reality and empathy, debating whether the media makes viewers more empathetic than other types of media. The debate ultimately led us to the virtual reality film “Henry” by Oculus Story Studio, which received enough attention to garner an Emmy. I personally approached the VR from a film perspective, analyzing the VR using classic film scholars who wrote before VR existed. My posts on the subject can be found here. In addition to the written work I contributed to the project, I also led the team, delegating assignments, setting deadlines, and running meetings.
